The archipelago of Bocas del Toro is one of Panama’s greatest attractions. Situated on the Caribbean coast
about twenty miles from the Costa Rican border, the province consists of nine densely forested islands, 52
keys and 200 uninhabited islets. White sand beaches and a decidedly laid-back ambiance have made Bocas
del Toro a destination of choice for visitors around the globe. And many of them choose to stay.
In 1502 Christopher Columbus found the island of Carenero an ideal spot for repairing his boats and he
is credited with giving the island its name. Pirates would later use the many coves and sheltered waters
of the province as protected hideouts during the Spanish colonial days when the area was used as a
trans-shipment point for gold heading to the old world from the new.
Later centuries would see Bocas del Toro as the hub of cacao and banana production whose architectural
legacy can still be seen today and, along with Puerto Armuelles, is unique in Panama. Wooden plantation
style homes and buildings, some restored to original condition, can be found in Bocas town and its
surrounds.
Although Bocas del Toro has been on the tourist ‘map’ longer than many other areas of Panama, it retains
a great deal of charm and has not succumbed to heavy development or high-rise hotels. Living on the
islands can be an idyllic experience for many reasons: the population is mainly English speaking, the
long standing tourist presence has fostered a large number of venues for dining and entertainment, the
recreation is superb with unparalleled diving, surfing and fishing, and a fairly large group of expatriate
residents gives those who make Bocas home a sense of community.
Amongst the kinds of property to be found in Bocas are everything from low-rise condominiums to
elegant one-of-a-kind island homes. Lots and land are available in all sizes and the prices remain
competitive.
Bocas del Toro is the premier destination in Panama for those looking for a gently paced Caribbean island
lifestyle. Many of the natives originally came to the islands from Jamaica, San Andres and Providencia
bringing with them the beat of their African roots, their cuisine and a culture that lets Bocas del Toro
play a wonderful role in the diversity of this small country. |
